In London you either learn to be patient or you go insane. Waiting in queues is a virtue here and any unnecessary haste is futile. You get used to planning at least one hour for the ride even if you only want to make a short trip. ‘Signal errors’ are the most frequent reason for getting stuck on the Tube – that is to say: in many cases the way becomes the goal especially if the goal was not the way.
In the vicinity, in Hackney Wick, you sometimes feel as if you were in New York. Artists, graffiti sprayers and skateboarders have conquered a huge area, though pop-up bars and galleries already mark the beginning of commercialisation so that avant-garde artists move on. These continuous moves and flows make the city an extremely vibrant place so that you surprisingly often feel to be in the right place at the right time here in London. Even when you wait in line!

| If you want to be productive artistically, the real art is to keep trips short and not let the city distract you too much. I did not manage to do that, but at least I met Wolfgang Tillmans on the Tube. | |

| At the back of the house, there is a small café frequented by artists; for the best fish & chips go to the Fishhouse at Lauriston Road near Victoria Park. | |
