Krumlov, Czech Republic06/16–08/16

Anneliese Schrenk

...during my stay I mainly focused on my work … I withdrew very much … combed through old notes … developed new ideas … researched … made sketches … wrote … turned things over in my mind … and over again … sketched … wrote … re-wrote … re-sketched … struggled with my work … it was a kind of timeout for me … I did not have any obligations … I was able to focus entirely on myself and my work … Krumlov was very good for that … Krumlov is a very, very touristic place … unfortunately, there are hardly any shops where you can buy supplies … many shops have closed … probably had to close … there are almost only restaurants and souvenir shops … a friend who visited me said to me: ‘It’s even worse than in Venice …’ and somehow this is also the case because – to my mind – the town does not function anymore without tourism … but the town is magnificent!! … I also enjoyed the studio very much and retreated to it because all the rest was too much for me … I pretty much shut myself off … very often went to the Castle Garden in the morning to draw … almost daily … before the tourists arrived … I primarily reflected on my work, which can hardly be described here…

1. Dos & dont's in this place:
...I really can’t say anything about this ... the place is what it is ... any place is what it is … and everyone can do what/how … he/she pleases...
2. Where to buy great supplies:
...unfortunately, many shops closed and made “way” for restaurants … there are hardly any artistic supplies, I discovered a drugstore that closed in July … the Koh-i-Noor shop is very touristic … there is a small store belonging to an older gentleman where you can also buy crayons … as well as paper bags … I found him very, very nice … you have to bring along your supplies from Vienna … but Krumlov has a multitude of other qualities … or rather, that’s how I saw it...
3. Concerning art at this destination:
...there is actually only the Egon Schiele Art Center … there are hardly any recent works in the city … the city thrives on Schiele ... although he only lived here for 3months … and then was driven away … the museum itself has almost only art prints … hardly any originals and other exhibitions…
4. Around the studio – where I shop, drink my coffee and get the best lunch deal in walking distance:
..I hardly went out … I can recommend the DEPOT ... and next to it there is a small shop where you could drink coffee...
5. Where I like to spend the evening (dinner, drinks and best sound):
...if at all, then at the DEPOT, but in fact I spent almost all the time at the studio and thought things over … at the end of my stay I discovered a nice place … I don’t know its name … when you come from the studio … turn left at the bridge … the last place … it was very private...
6. What would have been useful to know before coming here and starting my residency:
...that the studio is around 6 m high...
